trials and tribulations of two tech geeks geocaching in and around Auckland, New Zealand

Rocky Road (series)

We wanted to highlight some of the amazing views along the roads of the Pohutukawa coast and beyond. Rocky Road takes you to some of these locations and provides a quick stop on route to other cache sites.

There is space for at least one car to pull over safely

I (Andy) discovered the location for Rocky Road 1 when checking out possible spots for my 143 cache (GC19B8G) the 143 coordinates unfortunately took you just over the fence line, If you want to see the original view you can cross the road from this cache location and make your way up the bank (Please be careful crossing this road).

Say hello to the sheep in the field below when you arrive :)

Rocky Road or a Sandy Stone… perhaps a little of both :)

Number two in a series of road side camo micro caches (most in plain sight) that highlight some of the amazing views along the roads of the lovely Pohutukawa coast, many of which we drive by without even realising they are there.

All locations have space for at least one car to pull over safely, this one has space on either side of the road but please be careful if your approach means you need to cross the road.

This amazing view takes in the ever changing, and quickly developing, South East Auckland landscape. It has a lovely view during daylight hours but is quite spectacular at night and well worth taking a moment just to enjoy the lights beyond

The third in our Rocky Road series which highlights awesome locations and views that we all too often drive right past without a thought, look or glance… and this great little spot is no exception.

This one is a favourite of ours, it has a great view day or night and it comes complete with friendly, inquisitive donkeys!

4WD owners should have no problems parking on either side of the road, for those of us who own the domestic variety there is a great parking spot directly opposite. Extreme care should be taken if / when you cross the road, the speed limit is 80 and at peak hours you will get a steady traffic flow in both directions.

We love this little spot out the back of Clevedon and it’s been the excuse for many a “lets take the long way home”.

The views are expansive and equally as impressive on a fine day where you can see for miles, or on an overcast day where you can watch the storms roll in.

Sadly this little spot seems to be a dumping ground so if you can grab a bag and take a handful of rubbish away with you it would be greatly appreciated… many hands make light work :)

There is off road parking available on one side of the road only, conveniently right beside the cache. It’s a stress free parking experience, we had no problems with our domestic car or with getting back onto the road.

Traffic conditions vary based on day and time but due to the winding road and uphill position vehicle speeds are reasonable.

This lovely view is often missed as you’re getting from A to B which is a shame, more so as this expansive landscape is changing so quickly.

The view is lovely during the day but the location really comes into it’s own at night so hold off if you can as it’s well worth the wait till dark.

Like our other Rocky Road caches in this series it’s in plain view on the road side so no poking around is required.

Parking available on one side of the road only, the side the cache is on so all aspects of this find should be stress free and enjoyable

Our 6th Rocky Road and this little stunner is tucked away at the top of a cul-de-sac, only slight off the beaten track, but the views from the top of this hidden gem are too good to ignore so we’ve included it in this series of road side caches.

Like our other Rocky Road caches in this series it’s in plain view so no poking around is required, with this location parking is readily available along the quiet no exit road.

The view from the top is just amazing and it’s equally so on your journey back down the hill so take a moment out to enjoy and give yourself a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
